Intro to the Beginnings of AI To understand the current position of AI in the realm of ethics and philosophy, it is necessary to understand its origins. Although its philosophical origins will be explored in a later section, its origins within computer science provide the basis from which all following AI research followed. Arguably, the two most formative events in the creation of AI are The paper Computing Machinery and Intelligence, by Alan Turing, and The Logic Theorist, by Newell, Shaw, and Simon. These events put the idea of AI in the heads of many researchers, and between the early successes of the field and the philosophy of the time, AI was ensured of a privileged position in computer science research for many years to come. |
