CS21 Lab 0: UNIX and the text editor

Learn the text editor we will use to write programs by running the vim tutorial.

• open up a terminal and run the vimtutor command

You don't have to learn every single command. Just make sure you know the basics -- how to: open a file, add text to the file, delete text from the file, save the file, and quit the editor. Don't spend more than about 20-30 minutes on the tutorial.

Complete just the following sections of vimtutor:

• all of Lesson 1 (moving around, x, i, A, :wq)
• NOTE: to move around faster, try Ctrl-f and Ctrl-b (forward and backward)
• Lesson 2.6 (dd)
• Lesson 2.7 (undo)
• Lesson 3.1 (p) and 3.2 (r)
• Lesson 4.1 (G) and 4.2 (searching)
• Lesson 6.2 (a), 6.3 (R), and 6.4 (y and p)

I have created a short VIM Summary to help you remember the most frequently used commands. You may want to print this and bring it with you to class the first couple of weeks.
