 "A Conversation With Michael Lomax"

Phi Beta Kappa member Dr. Michael Lomax, CEO and President of the United
Negro College Fund, describes his role in the 1968 establishment of
Morehouse College's Phi Beta Kappa Chapter and explains the need to learn
one's history and culture in this *Key Reporter* piece by Malcom Morse
<http://PBK.informz.net/z/cjUucD9taT00MzE1MDc5JnA9MSZ1PTg0MTMwMjAyNSZsaT0yNzIwNDUwNA/index.html>
.

Well, there were four of us in the book. I was just the first person to
sign,” Dr. Michael Lomax, CEO and President of the United Negro College
Fund, said with a quick chuckle. Reflecting on his induction into Phi Beta
Kappa in 1968, the charter year of the Delta of Georgia chapter at
Morehouse College, a small liberal arts college established for the
education of African American men located in Atlanta, Georgia, he recounted
the role he played in the chapter’s acquisition.

     Behind the Key
John Roth

“Behind the Key” features Phi Beta Kappa members whose lives have been
shaped by the liberal arts and sciences.

Meet *John Roth*, philosopher and human rights advocate. Roth's first job
was teaching at Claremont Men's College (now Claremont McKenna College), a
position which he held for more than forty years. In 1988 Roth was honored
as U.S. Professor of the Year for his commitment to education at Claremont.

On the liberal arts, Roth believes, "Their power is unsurpassed when it
comes to raising key questions, arousing curiosity, stimulating inquiry and
dialogue, promoting respect for evidence and criticism, and deepening
ethical, political and spiritual insight. Mass atrocity crimes and other
human rights abuses are unlikely to be resisted effectively unless the
dispositions honed by the liberal arts are supported and expanded."

“No one is born hating another person because of the color of his skin, or
his background, or his religion. People must learn to hate, and if they can
learn to hate, they can be taught to love, for love comes more naturally to
the human heart than its opposite.” Nelson Mandela, Long Walk to Freedom
