I was Class of '01 at Swarthmore, with a major in Physics, and a minor in Psychology focused on Cog Sci. After a slightly round-about route that involved among other things getting my Ph.D. in experimental physics, I've found myself working as the "data guru" for a small computer vision company (The Blindsight Corp) that builds "advanced assistive technologies that enrich the lives of blind and actively aging individuals." We're looking for talented students or recent grads with computer vision chops. If there was anyone in your recent classes that you thought would be interested, would you be willing to forward them the description I've attached below? Alternatively, would you forward it to the general CS [JOB OPP] list? I think its a great place, with a broad, multidisciplinary approach to the challenges, and we would love to have more Swatties in the office! Thanks in advance! Sincerely, Dave Auerbach dave@blindsight.com 510-698-2030 http://blindsight.com/ ---------------- Computer Vision internship in Berkeley, CA Fellow Swatties, I recently started a position at Blindsight ( http://blindsight.com/ , see description below), contributing to the development of computer vision systems to assist people with disabilities. We're looking for summer or full-year interns to help us improve our current iPhone-based wild-text to speech system and design and develop our upcoming products. We're a small group of multidisciplinary people, with experience in Computer Vision, Natural Language Processing, Data Analysis, Algorithm+UI design, and product design. Our downtown Berkeley office feels like a comfortable mix of research lab and startup. We're looking for smart, flexible, self-motivated folks who are excited to sink their teeth into cutting edge real-time computer vision problems. We'd like interns to have a solid foundation in computer vision and CS and a willingness to learn new tools, techniques, and disciplines. Interested folks can contact me directly at dave@blindsight.com . Please send a resume, pointers to examples of past work, and a cover letter describing why you are interested. Thanks! Dave Auerbach, '01 -------------- About Blindsight: "Advanced assistive technologies that enrich the lives of blind and actively aging individuals. Whether due to aging, disease or accident, millions of people in the US face daily challenges with tasks that many of us take for granted as easy to accomplish * traveling around a neighborhood, reading the label on a medicine bottle, choosing the right product in a supermarket. Blindsight, an R&D/product firm based near the UC Berkeley campus, envisions unique services and products to help these individuals increase their mobility, safety and independence." ----- End forwarded message ----- -- Lisa Meeden Swarthmore College Professor, Computer Science 500 College Ave. meeden@cs.swarthmore.edu Swarthmore, PA 19081 www.cs.swarthmore.edu/~meeden 610-328-8565 ________________________________________________________________________
