The Department of Biomedical Informatics (DBMI) at Vanderbilt University is currently accepting applications for Fall 2010. We offer research-oriented MS and PhD degrees, as well as non-degree postdoctoral training. Financial support is available on a competitive basis from our National Library of Medicine (NLM) institutional training grant, the Department of Veterans' Affairs, faculty research grants, and other sources. Highly qualified candidates are encourage to apply now.

Biomedical Informatics is the discipline that applies principles of computer and information science to the advancement of life sciences research, health professions education, and patient care. A major strength of Biomedical Informatics at Vanderbilt is the creation and evaluation of real-world systems in each of these mission areas. The Vanderbilt DBMI Training Program is uniquely positioned to prepare future leaders in the field with a comprehensive understanding gained through a strong foundation in the principles and theory of biomedical informatics, and participation in mentored scientific research and large-scale informatics projects. Collaboration on ongoing research projects within the Department of Biomedical Informatics and with the diverse faculty of Vanderbilt's basic, clinical, and engineering sciences departments are highly encouraged. Research interests of selected Department faculty include:

? interpretation of gene expression and proteomic signatures

? correlation of gene expression in tumor cells with both diagnosis and prognosis

? mathematical modeling techniques for systems biology

? development of clinical decision support systems

? institutional models for integrating clinical decision support at the point of care

? advanced electronic medical record systems and clinical data repositories

? work process transformation and people-organization issues

? data privacy, de-identification and re-identification

? natural language processing and innovative approaches to medical education

Students who enter the MS and PhD degree programs typically have a background in one of the health professions (e.g., MD, DO, RN), or with a background in computing, engineering, biology, or mathematics. DBMI students have achieved outstanding publication records, as well as numerous recognitions from national organizations. Candidates with prior training in computing, engineering, biology, or mathematics are preferred. After graduation, they pursue careers as full-time academic researchers, part-time academic researchers/part-time clinicians, scientific managers and advanced scientists in industry, information managers in health care settings, consultants or entrepreneurs.

Our program's primary source of funding (for full tuition, stipend, health insurance, and travel expenses) is the NLM/NIH training grant. These prestigious fellowships are intended to prepare students for research careers in academia and industry, and therefore may only be used to fund students who are seeking PhDs; unless they already hold a terminal degree in their field (e.g., PhD, MD). Funding is also restricted to U.S. citizens or permanent residents.

Accompanying this letter is an informational brochure, the curriculum of our MS and PhD Degree Programs, and a representative list of our faculty and their research interests. Please share this information with any potential candidates for whom you believe this training would be attractive. For more information about the program and the application process, please visit our website at http://dbmi.mc.vanderbilt.edu/education/ or contact me at Cindy.Gadd@Vanderbilt.Edu or (615) 936-1068.

Sincerely,

Cynthia S. Gadd, PhD
