Ethan Jucovy, a recent Swarthmore alum, suggested that I might contact you. I am hoping to let Swarthmore students know about job opportunities at The Open Planning Project (TOPP). Specifically, I wonder whether there are any cool student groups (Engineers for Social Change, etc) that might be interested in our work? TOPP is a small high-tech non-profit based in New York City, and we are after alternatives to a monetized digital world. Through our software, we are working to increase government transparency and enhance citizen engagement in decision-making. Essentially, we build software to help people do good in the world. We're organized a lot like a start up, and we turn out to be a great alternative to places with a more corporate environment/mission. Our developers are folks who want to ensure that their code actually works in the public interest. We're growing quickly, and we're hoping to connect with CS majors to work on our newest project. OpenPlans is a (free, ad-free, etc) suite of hosted project management and communications tools. We're especially interested in folks who are into open source development (all of our work is open source) and who want to put good, useful tools into the hands of activists, advocacy groups, and non-profits. Our test user base is scores of groups in NYC who are (for a variety of reasons relating to quality of life concerns) advocating for a healthy approach to urban planning. Hope that this email isn't a bother. Just wanted to let you know a bit about what we do. Students who have an interest in open source work and/or community organizing sometimes have a harder time matching their skills and passions with potential career paths. We're trying to get the word out about a pretty unique option. Thanks for your time.
