I want to tell you about Virginia Commonwealth University's Bioinformatics
and Bioengineering Summer Institute. We welcomed our first class last year,
drawing from all over the U.S. (mostly small schools like Swarthmore).
They'll be coming back for the second summer but now I'm cranking up to
find students for next year's entering class.

Let me describe how the BBSI is different from a usual REU:

1. It is a program that extends from one summer through the following
academic year and into the next summer.

2. It connects faculty at the student's home institution (e.g. you) with
faculty at VCU through the medium of the student and a project that has a
strong bioinformatics or bioengineering component and works at both
institutions.

3. It supports the research experience with research simulations throughout
the first summer, taught by the students' mentors and designed to give the
students a quick on-ramp to a successful reseaerch project.

4. It provides support to each student in the form of a stipend plus all
expenses and some money to support the project at both institutions.

Since it is a 15-month program, we're looking for students who could commit
for that period. Sophomores/rising juniors would be the most likely, but
some juniors/rising seniors might be willing.

We don't have any particular prerequisite, but the student should thrive at
the bottom of the learning curve, where there's lots of confusion and
endless possibilities. He/she should be good at something that can
contribute to the mix (and we'll have quite a mix) and should be curious
about bioinformatics or bioengineering.

If you know a student or faculty member who might be interested, feel free
to pass on this message. Also, here's a possibly useful website:

If you want a poster, you can download one from:

or I can send you one after they're printed.

Thanks,

Jeff
