Dear Professor Kelemen,

I'm an alum of Swarthmore College ('02) and currently working at Google
in New York. Recently I noticed an announcement on our internal website
informing our staff that Google is planning to start a full fledged
engineering center in India by early next year. We're looking for great
engineers and researchers to make it a world class operation. From what
I can tell, they're mostly looking for people with experience but I have
the utmost faith in Swarthmore graduates and think it's worth a shot for
students graduating this year to apply for a position.

When I graduated from Swarthmore I had a hard time finding a job and
there weren't a lot of resources available to me (then again, I wasn't a
CS or engin major, so maybe that was the problem). When I saw that
Google was looking for new hires for their Bangalore office, I
immediately thought of Swarthmore. In recent years the Indian-American
population at Swarthmore has surged, and of course, Swatties of all
backgrounds are often interested in working abroad.

Below is a more detailed description of what Google is looking for. I'm
not working with our engineering department, but I would be happy to
pass on any names of Swarthmore graduates (or soon-to-be-graduates) who
might be interested in joining our team. Google is a wonderful place to
work and, as I mentioned before, even without sufficient work
experience, I believe no one could do a better job than a Swattie given
the opportunity. Please do pass this information on to your students.

Best wishes,
Keetje Kuipers

Google is opening a R&D center in Bangalore, India -- our first outside
the
US. We are looking for exceptional software engineers and researchers in
search, machine learning, distributed systems, algorithms and pretty
much
every area of computer science. We seek innovators and builders.

Google India will be a mini-Google USA. All dimensions including scope
of
work, hiring standards, and engineering fun/freedom will be on par. We
expect to do all aspects of engineering work - conception, research,
implementation & deployment in the India office.

Google is expanding to India to take advantage of the considerable
technical talent that exists there. Our objective is to attract
the best and brightest and provide them with excellent compensation
and a world class environment. This is not a cost-cutting operation! We
will
do what it takes to get the cream of the crop and retain them. Engineers
can
move between the India and US offices the same way engineers at Google
move
between projects today.

In Google we like to put exceptional people together in a technically
charged
and fun environment and have them work on products that directly affect
millions.
Our mission is simple yet challenging: to organize the world's
information
and make it universally useful and accessible. We're looking for
talented
engineers to make this happen!
